Hybrid Inverter 3.6 kW & 5.0 kW (Gen 1) Installation Manual

Download Manual

This manual provides a full installation and configuration summary for the GivEnergy Generation 1 Hybrid Inverter in 3.6 kW and 5.0 kW models. It consolidates all essential information from the official installation manual, including safety requirements, mounting instructions, AC/DC wiring guidance, battery compatibility, EPS setup, commissioning, and shutdown procedures.

Product Overview

The Gen 1 Hybrid Inverter is a combined solar inverter and battery inverter, supporting bi-directional operation. It can charge from solar (DC coupled) and from the grid (AC coupled), while supplying the property and reducing both import and export through built-in energy management. It is compatible with Gen 1 and Gen 2 GivEnergy batteries.

General Installation Requirements

  • Installation must be carried out by a GivEnergy Approved Installer.
  • Store the inverter in original packaging between 5°C and 60°C.
  • Do not stack more than 4 units.
  • Ensure installation location is well-ventilated and not exposed to direct sunlight.
  • Mount vertically with all connections at the bottom.
  • Minimum wall thickness for mounting: 100 mm.

Safety Instructions

  • System may retain hazardous voltage even when disconnected.
  • Do not touch the heat sink during operation; it becomes hot.
  • Only GivEnergy batteries may be used.
  • DC battery voltage must not exceed 60 V.
  • Reverse polarity will damage the inverter.
  • Minimum DC battery cable size: 16 mm² tri-rated.
  • Comply with IEE Wiring Regulations at all times.

Mounting the Inverter

Remove the mounting bracket and mark the fixing points. Drill 4 × 75 mm deep holes and secure the bracket using the supplied M6 × 50 expansion bolts. Hang the inverter on the bracket and secure using the two M4 locking screws.

Required Clearances

  • Top: 300 mm
  • Bottom: 250 mm
  • Left: 250 mm
  • Right: 250 mm

Connections Overview

  • PV Input
  • Battery DC terminals
  • AC supply terminals
  • EPS terminals
  • PV isolation switch
  • USB port (WiFi/4G module)
  • RS485 / CT / BMS / DRM communication ports

AC Utility Grid Connection

The required AC cable sizes and protection depend on model:

ModelMax Output CurrentBreakerMinimum Cable Size
HY 3.616.4 AC202.5–4 mm²
HY 5.022.8 AC25/C324–6 mm²

EPS (Emergency Power Supply)

The EPS output supports up to 5000 W (model-dependent). It must be protected by a 30 mA RCD (up to 20 A) close to the inverter. Correct EPS wiring diagrams are shown in the manual alongside examples of incorrect configurations.

Battery Connections

Gen 1 Battery (2.6 / 5.2 / 8.2 kWh)

  • Use a ring-terminal to ring-terminal DC cable.
  • Install a minimum 100 A DC MCB between battery and inverter.

Gen 2 Battery (9.5 kWh)

  • Use ring-terminal to all-in-one plug cable.
  • A DC MCB must be installed between Gen 2 and any additional Gen 1 batteries.

Connecting the MID Meter

  • A MID-approved meter is required for grid import/export monitoring.
  • Install CT clamp around incoming live cable with arrow pointing towards the property.

Communication Ports

  • RS485 – meter or EMS
  • CT terminal
  • DRM input
  • BMS (battery communication)
  • USB (WiFi/4G dongle)

Start-Up Procedure

  1. Connect and switch on AC breaker.
  2. Turn on the PV isolation switch.
  3. Turn on the battery breaker.
  4. Turn on the battery.
  5. Inverter will start when PV voltage >150 V and battery >46.4 V.

Shutdown Procedure

  1. Turn off battery.
  2. Disconnect the battery breaker.
  3. Turn off PV switch.
  4. Open AC breaker.
  5. Wait for LEDs to turn off before working on the system.

Commissioning

All systems must be commissioned via the GivEnergy Portal. Log in at https://portal.givenergy.cloud using installer credentials. Set battery parameters correctly, verify meter readings, and ensure communication is active.

Decommissioning

  1. Follow full shutdown process.
  2. Remove all AC/DC and communication cabling.
  3. Remove the inverter from the wall bracket.
  4. Remove the mounting bracket.

Storage & Packaging

  • Store between -25°C and +60°C.
  • Use original packaging where possible.
  • If repacking, secure the inverter firmly with suitable supports.

Operating Modes

The Gen 1 Hybrid supports several operating modes:

  • Eco Mode – Prioritises using solar and battery power to support the home.
  • Off-Peak Charging / Peak Discharging – Uses tariff schedule for timed charging and discharging.
  • Back-Up / Island Mode – Provides EPS output during grid failure when correctly wired.

Warranty

The Gen 1 Hybrid Inverter 3.6 kW & 5.0 kW is covered by a 12-year manufacturer warranty.
