This article provides an installation, configuration, and operation summary for the GivEnergy EV Charger (7.2 kW, V2).

System Overview

The GivEnergy EV Charger is a Type 2, 7.2 kW (32 A) AC charger designed for residential or commercial installation. It integrates with the GivEnergy ecosystem for smart charging control, solar matching, hybrid charging, scheduling, and data monitoring.

Key Features

  • 7.2 kW (32 A) AC charging output.
  • Type 2 tethered connector (5 m cable).
  • Compatible with solar-only, hybrid, and grid-only setups.
  • Built-in PEN fault protection—no earth rod required.
  • Built-in tamper detection switch.
  • WiFi and LAN connectivity.
  • Supports Grid, Schedule, Hybrid, and Solar charging modes.
  • Controlled via RFID, GivEnergy App, or the cloud.
  • Compact IP-rated housing suitable for indoor/outdoor installation.

Safety Requirements

  • The EV Charger must be installed by a qualified electrician.
  • Installation must comply with IEE BS7671 wiring regulations.
  • A 32 A Type A RCD/RCBO is recommended.
  • Ensure the unit is fully isolated before opening any cover.
  • Do not install near water sources or in direct sunlight.
  • Do not operate if the casing is cracked, bulging, or damaged.
  • The tamper switch must be engaged for compliant operation.

Box Contents & Components

  • EV Charger (Tethered)
  • Wall Mounting Bracket
  • 2 × RFID Cards

Installation Requirements

  • Check customer WiFi strength at installation site—LAN or WiFi may be required.
  • Confirm main supply fuse rating for charger current limiting.
  • Plan routing for AC supply, LAN, and meter communication cables.
  • The charger must be mounted above the frost line (minimum 50 mm).
  • Charger must be mounted vertically.

Step-by-Step Installation

  1. Check WiFi/LAN viability at installation location.
  2. Fix mounting bracket to the wall (three mounting holes, min. depth 75 mm).
  3. Remove front covers and hang the charger on the bracket. Drill two additional fixing points and secure the unit.
  4. Run AC supply cable through rubber grommet, strip 12 mm insulation, and wire to the internal terminals.
  5. Install LAN and RS485 communication cables (if required for Hybrid/Solar modes).
  6. Reinstall covers ensuring the tamper switch is firmly pressed down.
  7. Turn on AC supply and verify beep codes:
  • 1 beep: No meter detected.
  • 2 beeps: Meter detected and communicating.

EM115 / GEM120 Meter Installation

For solar-assisted or hybrid charging:

  • Install a CT clamp (arrow pointing towards consumer unit grid feed cable).
  • Use twisted pair data cable (Cat5/6 or equivalent) for RS485 communication.
  • Each meter requires a 230 V supply reference.
  • Meters must not have their CT cables cut or extended.

Setup & App Configuration

  • Customer logs into the GivEnergy App.
  • Scan the QR code on the charger.
  • Enter DNO fuse rating.
  • Select WiFi or Ethernet mode.
  • Input WiFi credentials if required.
  • Follow the onscreen steps until “EV Charger Online.”

Charging Modes

  • Grid: Charge using grid power up to max current.
  • Solar: Charge only using surplus solar (minimum 6 A).
  • Hybrid: Combination of grid + solar, balancing to maintain 6 A minimum.
  • Schedule: Time-controlled charging aligned with off-peak tariffs.

Operation

  • Start/stop charging using RFID cards or the App.
  • Charger auto-stops when the vehicle reaches full charge.
  • LED indicators display Ready, Charging, Error, and Connectivity states.

Troubleshooting

Common issues:

  • Tamper switch released – Check covers and refit.
  • No meter communication – Check RS485 polarity and wiring.
  • Grid voltage high/low – Check supply quality.
  • Ground fault – Inspect AC wiring and earth continuity.
  • Over-temperature – Ensure ventilation and unblocked vents.
